The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has made changes to its military uniform, specifically modifying the national flag patches worn on the sleeves. The bright-colored flag patches have been replaced with darker-toned versions.
These changes became noticeable at the beginning of this month when some RDF soldiers appeared in public wearing uniforms with the new patches. So far, RDF has not officially announced or explained the reason behind the change.
RDF Spokesperson Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga told IGIHE (the source of this news) that the change was made because the previous flag patch was too bright, and the new one has darker colors.
“The old patch was very bright and easily visible, the new one is darker—nothing more. The reason was simply to eliminate the bright colors. Just like the uniform changed from one set of colors to another, the goal is to make it less visible… A military uniform must offer camouflage.” He explained.
Camouflage refers to the use of specific colors or patterns that help a person, animal, or object blend into their surroundings to avoid detection. These colors are often blended into clothing or gear to help conceal the wearer, particularly in hostile environments or during defense operations.
